Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she was already making her TV debut on a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
